Respect and Why the Marine Corps Has a Rank Structure.

Table of Content

Examining the Marine Corps, respect and the significance of rank structure emerge as crucial elements for a prosperous military unit. This essay delves into the notion of respect, encompassing its acquisition and enforcement within the armed forces, particularly from lower-ranked individuals towards their superiors. Furthermore, it addresses the importance of rank structure in fostering order and discipline within the military.

Regardless of our immature or unconventional behavior, it is essential to recognize and acknowledge the potential within ourselves and others. Others must see and honor this potential in order to support our growth. Different individuals value and respect various qualities such as sound judgment, strength, power, altruism, and purposefulness. While parents and teachers may offer initial guidance, each person ultimately determines whom they respect. Respecting someone is a privilege that is earned through actions.
However, the military operates differently when it comes to respect. Superior Officers, NCOs, and those with more experience demand respect in the military. The definition of respect in the military can be ambiguous. Respect must be shown to someone not necessarily because they deserve it but because of their position. This especially applies to higher-ranking officers who have greater authority compared to enlisted personnel. However, this does not mean that all Commissioned Officers or Non-Commissioned Officers do not deserve respect based on their character traits; most of them actually do since good leaders are usually assigned to their roles.
